Research scientists at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Germany have developed a mini-laboratory system that allows for fast blood and other tests to be conducted in the doctor’s office. The system is composed of a plastic disposable cartridge which is filled by the doctor with various reagents depending on what needs to be tested. The cartridge is then placed in a measurement system which automatically reads out the results within thirty minutes, even for complex analysis. It is a versatile modular system enabling various types of bioanalysis, even including DNA tests. In addition to medical use, Fraunhofer also foresees use in other sectors such as food analysis and doping checks.
