As part of the 9th edition of the ImagéSanté festival in Liège, Belgium, a neurosurgical operation was captured and retransmitted live in 3D full HD video. The surgery was performed by Prof. Didier Martin at the University Hospital of Liège and was transmitted live to a movie theater 16 kilometers away from the hospital. The team had to overcome many hurdles to make this all happen. A special optical fiber network was laid out between the hospital and the theater through which 500 Mb/s of data were streamed continuously during the three hours of the event. This impressive achievement was made possible by a collaboration of 16 companies and the university. More technical details can be found in the press release.
