The largest, and coincidentally our favorite, medical gadget is finally in the waters off Haiti providing medical services to people injured in the earthquake. The US Navy hospital ship Comfort, with its 12 surgical suites and 1,000 patient beds, is already treating patients as it’s getting ready to dock for an extended mission on the shores of Hispaniola. Conveniently, the ship has a number of Haitian-American crew members aboard that can provide Creole translation and guidance regarding cultural norms of the arriving population.
