Evalve, Inc. (Menlo Park, CA) is reporting that its MitraClip®, a percutaneous mitral valve repair device, has been successfully implanted into the first series of patients at the Cardiocentro Ticino in Lugano, Switzerland. We’ve been following up on this device since 2004. The company describes its product, approved only in the European Union, as a “non-surgical mitral valve repair option for patients suffering from the effects of functional and degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR).”
More about the device:
The system consists of three major subsystems:
A Steerable Guide Catheter, A Clip Delivery System, and The MitraClip® device(implant). The Guide Catheter is inserted into the femoral vein at the groin and provides access to the mitral valve. The Clip is used to grasp and fasten together the valve leaflets. The Clip Delivery System is used to deliver and deploy the MitraClip® device.
