Pantec Biosolutions out of Lichtenstein, has received the European CE Mark for the company’s P.L.E.A.S.E. (Painless Laser Epidermal System) device that preps the skin for better penetration by transdermal pharmaceutical agents. According to the company, the system is designed “to apply micropores into the human skin prior to transdermal large molecular weight drug administration.” As we have previously reported, this device could one day be used for a variety of clinical applications, such as pain control, diabetes management, and delivering drugs for in vitro fertilization.
Here’s how P.L.E.A.S.E. is used:
The device including a disposable tip is gently pressed to the intraepidermal application site (e.g. the inner forearm) The poration process is started by pressing a button upon proper skin contact. Prior to the poration process the physician or other authorised medical personnel sets the poration parameters necessary for the therapeutic dose of the intraepidermal system (“drug patch”). The actual poration process can take from 1 to 5 seconds depending on the drug dose to be applied. Immediately after the poration process is finished the poration area will be covered with the drug patch system. The drug then diffuses easily through the dermis where it can be absorbed by the blood system
