Yesterday we were given a tour of iMedicor by Tom Dorsett, the president of Healthcare Solutions at Vemics, Inc, the parent company. iMedicor is a new online medical network that is strikingly different from the others we have seen. The others, like iMedExchange and Sermo, are intended to be professional social networks for sharing work experiences, discussing products and drugs, and having general conversation much like Friendster and Facebook do for the wider public. iMedicor has instead built a system for physicians and nurses to, among other things, share patient specific data, documents, and communications in a HIPAA compliant environment. The service behaves more like a typical email provider and a file sharing site, lumped together with a social network for clinicians. As Mr Dorsett explained, the idea was to provide an easy way to universally share clinical data, replacing the persistent dependence on the ancient system of faxing documents back and forth, and independent of any already installed EHR system.
Additionally, the system provides a way to refer patients to physicians, discover other physicians specializing in particular fields, and pass patient data along with the referral.
We were pleasantly surprised by the simple interface and usability of the system, and considering that its a free service, the deal is unbeatable.
There are a few other features iMedicor tacks on to the core features, like calendaring, scheduling of meetings which can be conducted using the built-in video teleconferencing system, discussion forums, and even blogging tools. There is even a subscription-based transcription service using a powerful voice recognition engine from Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical.
The service is only about two months old, and the list of features is rather impressive. Promising soon the ability to send prescriptions straight to the pharmacy from within the system, iMedicor is becoming a full service portal for very practical use by physicians and clinics.
