Smith & Nephew is recalling 185 of its Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System implants. They say that an error in packaging mixed up different acetabular cup sizes. Britain’s Channel 4 is reporting that two patients in the UK already had their implants removed.
The company Smith & Nephew has recalled 185 implants in the US and UK after a “packaging error” at a subcontractor was identified.
An “inappropriate” mixing of implant head and cup sizes means the joints fit loosely.
Around half of the implants have been distributed to UK hospitals but some of them have been recovered, a spokesman for the firm said.
