We’ve had the award-winning EpiFLO, then Oxygenesys, and now there’s Oxyzyme, which has just been launched by Insense Ltd.
The technology:
The Oxyzyme® system provides unique capabilities in preparation of the wound bed for healing. The system, contained within a hydrogel dressing, cleans the wound, produces oxygen, which has been shown to play a vital role in healing, and releases small amounts of iodine to kill bacteria and other microbes. Oxyzyme® works like no other wound care treatment, by active production and release of multiple factors which are known to be important to wound healing.
… a two-layer hydrogel dressing that contains a unique, active biochemical system, which oxygenates the wound and delivers controlled antimicrobial power. At the same time, the wound is cleaned up through enhanced autolytic debridement, whilst moisture is controlled by means of the hydrogel’s osmotic effect. Oxyzyme has been developed to the point at which the full manufacturing process has been validated, toxicology tests have been passed, and a stability of at least 2 years at ambient temperature has been proven.
The company has a couple of in vitro trials, which show the efficacy of the anti-microbial action of their product. However, they don’t seem to have any studies quantifying the effects of oxygen delivery or whether any extra oxygen is delivered at all. Also of concern is the fact that hydrogen peroxide is toxic to cells, and can produce free radicals. Would a constant delivery of it impede healing? Or could it, perhaps, cause genetic damage?
