In case you did not know, failure to ventilate and intubate in the operating room is one of the most common causes of death in the OR. It happens rarely, but does happen. Here’s a device that can save a life or two. Designed by Edinburgh-based Aircraft Medical Ltd., and distributed in the US by LMA North America, Inc., the device is being showcased at the ongoing annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in Chicago.
More about the device from the manufacturer:
Securing the airway by endotracheal intubation is a key step in anaesthesia, and the emergency resuscitation of the critically ill patient. Intubation is assisted by use of a laryngoscope, which allows control of the epiglottis and visualisation of the vocal chords.
The McGrath® Series 5 Fully Portable Video Laryngoscope is a novel device which allows a clear view of the layngeal inlet during intubation…
The McGrath® offers cost-effective video laryngoscopy that can dramatically reduce the risks associated with difficult intubations, as well as high performance single-use optical blades to combat cross infection.
The patent-pending McGrath® Series 5 provides unrivalled vision of the larynx. This is achieved with on-board miniature camera and display technology, representing the world’s 1st fully-portable video laryngoscope.
The McGrath® The World’s First Fully Portable Video LaryngoscopeAn image of the larynx is captured by the McGrath® disposable optical blade and is transferred to a compact flat panel mounted at the top of the handle.
UPDATE: LMA’s representative has informed Medgadget that the device comes only with an adjustable curved MAC blade (sizes 3 to 5). The device does not feature and cannot be used with a straight Miller-type blade.
