Meant for minimally invasive surgery on bulging spinal discs, the SpineJet HydroDiscectomy System, powered by propriatery fluidjet technology, is this year’s winner of the Medical Design Excellence Award (surgical equipment category). The company, HydroCision, based in Billerica, Massachusetts, has developed a system in which a high velocity jet of water is used to cut and aspirate the herniated disk. According to the award’s press release, this minimally invasive surgical system allows disk decompressions to be performed in an outpatient setting.
The company explains:
The system – which includes the SpineJet MicroResector and HydroDiscectomy Access Set – harnesses the power of water to cut and aspirate nucleus simultaneously. The patented HydroCision fluidjet technology uses a high-velocity stream of water to cleanly remove tissue. Experience a safe, fast, accurate procedure every time.
Benefits
– Safe technique – The fluidjet stream produces no risk of thermal damage, and the rounded tip and depth stopper reduce the risk of annular puncture.
– Precision – The HydroDiscectomy Access Set is designed specifically for accurate placement within the nucleus.
– Predictable performance – The MicroResector removes predictable amounts of nucleus regardless of type or age.
