Highland Innovation Centre Ltd., a Scottish-based medical device company, describes its cool electronic stethoscope:
The UltraStethoscope is a novel type of electronic stethoscope that delivers improved sensitivity, convenience, and PC compatibility.
Through the use of advanced, yet relatively inexpensive microelectronic technology, this device is able to offer excellent levels of sound clarity.
The improved sensitivity of the UltraStethoscope allows it to operate through several layers of clothing. A potential benefit of this feature is that it could enable paramedics to examine patients whose clothes cannot be removed, such as those who are burned or trapped. Also those individuals who prefer to be examined without undressing can be accomodated. The stethoscope should have many domestic applications and we will appreciate feedback from customers on new applications. Suggested applications are detection of sounds caused by infestations in walls [ rodents, wasps etc ] and sounds caused by leaking / vibrating pipes.
There will shortly be available a: teaching version of the Ultrastethoscope which allows many users to listen simultaneously to signals from one source.
One wonders if the device is sensitive enough to detect the movement of bed bugs — our gold standard for stethoscope sensitivity.
