The Star-Ledger of New Jersey, in an article about Bluetooth technology, reports about Nonin Medical that “has used the technology to create a wireless pulse-reader for doctors.”
The company’s website has more about the Avant 4000:
Imagine oximetry without the constraints of cables. Now Nonin’s cutting-edge oximetry technology is paired with a wireless solution. The Avant® 4000 System with Bluetooth® Wireless Technology provides freedom from wired connections while ensuring reliable and secure transfer of patient data — all in a small package. The lightweight wrist-worn patient module wirelessly sends data to a small tabletop display, improving patient mobility and reducing bedside clutter. Nonin — opening new horizons in connectivity.
This is just another example of wireless technology that will revolutionize the delivery of medicine in this decade. We humbly predict that within 10 years the majority of patient monitors (from EKGs to Swan Ganz catheters) in industrialized countries will become wireless. An M.D. or R.N. sitting before a monitor will be able to monitor the patient continuously, no matter where the patient is in the hospital. Plus all the monitoring cables will be gone! If you think that we are overtly optimistic, you must wait and see…
