The 2009 Medical Weblog Awards Sponsored by Epocrates
Filed under: Medgadget Exclusive

With 2009 now in the history books, it's time to select last year's best of the best in the medical blogosphere. Welcome to the 2009 Medical Weblog Awards! This is the sixth year of the competition and these awards are designed to showcase the best medblogs, and to highlight the exciting and useful role that the medical blogosphere plays in medicine and society.
The categories for this year's awards are:
Best Medical Weblog Best New Medical Weblog (established in 2009) Best Literary Medical Weblog Best Clinical Sciences Weblog Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog Best Medical Technologies/Informatics Weblog Best Patient's Blog
Nominations are now accepted in the comments section of this post. When nominating, please indicate the blog's name and URL, as well as your thoughts why this particular blog deserves recognition. A blog can participate in more than one category, so please be precise which one(s). When we have all the nominees, Medgadget editors will sort through all the blogs, and we will select five blogs in each category based on merit, and on our own internal voting results.
The following time line will be observed:
Nominations will be accepted until Sunday, January 24, 2010. We will announce the finalists on Monday, January 25, 2010. Polls will be open from Wednesday, January 27, 2010 and will close 12 midnight on Sunday, February 14, 2010 (EST). Winners will be announced on Friday, February 19, 2010.

This year's competition is sponsored by Epocrates, developers of the #1 medical application trusted by over 900,000 healthcare professionals.
Epocrates is generously donating an iPod touch to winners in each category along with a subscription to its most popular premium suite, Epocrates Essentials. The grand prize winner in the Best Medical Weblog category will receive an iPod touch with the top-of-the-line suite, Epocrates Essentials Deluxe, and a $50 iTunes gift card. Epocrates premium mobile suite provides clinicians with all they need at the point of care - from drugs to diseases and diagnostics. The grand prize package is valued at over $500.

Of course, bragging rights are the ultimate reward, and we wish everyone the best of luck!
Medgadget.com, as well as the individual blogs of our editors, are not eligible to participate in the awards.
Voting for the awards will be open to all, but you will only be able to vote once. (No hacking or cookie manipulation will be tolerated -- only one vote for each category from a particular IP address.)
All final decisions will be made by our editors.
Good luck to all!

Trivial as it may seem balding affects 50% of our population and there are tons of misinformation that people have to muddle through. Baldingblog is intended to educate the public on hair loss topics based on personal experience and opinions from Dr. William Rassman (a world famous hair transplant surgeon) and contributing physician editors.

In the category of Best Literary Medical Weblog, I would like to nominate Caroline Rance for her excellent quackdoctor.com
Caroline's blog combines medical and advertising history with a dead eye for the human stories amongst the quackery. She has used her considerable research to complement her literary skill in her first novel, set amongst the suppurating and gin-ridden poor of Chester in the 18thC.
Always an entertaining and informative read, Caroline posts regularly and her blog is beautifully illustrated with 18thC images and 19thC advertising slogans. She informs and amuses on Twitter as @quackdoctor

Shamelessly nominating my blog for best patient blog, last year's 2008 finalist, "soulful sepulcher".
http://bipolarsoupkitchen-stephany.blogspot.com/
My blog hosts a variety of mental health news, and is mostly about my 22 year old daughter who is currently inpatient in a locked psychiatric facility, thus most of my current writings about her the last several months is life inside a locked psych ward, the lack of dignity, and the lack of funding for proper facilities, etc.
Thanks! I enjoyed being a finalist last year!

I would like to nominate Dr. D.J.'s Surgical Adventures for the Best Medical Weblog and for Best Literary Medical Weblog. The writing is true and sincere and quite funny at times. The purpose this blog was started was to highlight the fallicies in the Indian healthcare system at a basic general hospital level but realised that the same things happened even at posh private hospital setups.

Of course I will nominate my blog, I am a below elbow amputee and we go into the heart of the matter. It covers a very small medical subject but the blog kicks very serious butt:
- Successful base for networking: people get in touch with each other over interest in this blog.
- Successful base for innovation: the V2P Prehensor was built also by using my documented previous experience with Otto Bock's MovoHook 2Grip; we are currently building our own wrist unit that will enter the market soon; ..
- Successful base for distribution of specialized knowledge / experience sharing: first Mark from Tasmania called me and said, Wolf you need a Becker hand - then I ordered one - then we found this product was obscure and unknown - then I told Mark, see to it that John Becker gets a website - now we have Becker hands on the internet;
- Successful new ways of analyzing performance of prostheses - documenting ADL (activities of daily living), EODF (end of day feeling) all were later praised by insiders as state of the art content.
So these reviews and opinions are new, innovative, and cover a previously uncovered field.
So I like for you to consider this blog for an award.

Postpartum Progress is the most widely-read blog addressing issues of depression and anxiety in expectant and new mothers. Katherine Stone, herself a survivor of postpartum depression, is a terrific writer, serving up equal parts wit and wisdom.
Mothers will realize that they are not alone, they are not to blame, and that they will be well with the right kinds of help. Medical professionals will learn about the most up-to-date research, conferences, and ideas about helping women with perinatal mood disorders.
Postpartum Progress should be #1 on your list.

I nominate my blog for Best Clinical Sciences blog - http://healthskills.wordpress.com
It's written for health professionals working in the field of chronic pain from a psychosocial perspective and posts (almost) daily on research papers relevant to health practice. It's also read by numerous people with chronic pain. I hope it gives a human and respectful perspective on helping people with chronic pain cope with what is often an under-managed disorder.

Best Medical Blog: http://blog.nyayahealth.org -- Important and precedent-setting blog dealing with pertinent issues of global health and social equity often not discussed in many other blogs. In particular, this blog holds a niche position in the blogosphere for representing the voices of the often not-heard developing nations who have far less access to blogs, internet, and in the case of Nyaya Health, even electricity. Bravo to them for their important work and crucial advocacy in the blogosphere!

This is a blog about David Harrisson's journey from an unexpected finding of cardiovascular disease, through his bypass surgery and recuperation. It explores many of the questions and feelings that other patients in this situation may have, and gives an insight to all the staff caring for these patients.
And it is time-limited. David says he will stop it soon as he is going back to work.
Have a read! And thank you David:)

# Best Medical Weblog Pallimed http://www.pallimed.org/
From their "About" page: "Our target audience is the professionals (MD, DO, RN, LPN, LVN, Home Health Aide, ARNP, SW, Chaplain, Administrators, PT, OT, Speech, Pharmacy, etc.) working in hospice & palliative medicine, but we welcome all readers to this blog, including patients, families and other medical professionals outside of this field.
Our goal is to review current palliative medicine, hospice, end-of-life research with a particular focus on publications not from the major palliative care journals. We also highlight important events in end-of-life care from the news media and entertainment arenas. Pallimed is not intended to replace the patient-physician relationship."
# Best Literary Medical Weblog Pallimed: Arts & Humanities http://arts.pallimed.org/
From their "About" page: "Our goal is not only to provide enjoyment for you, the readers, but also to have some practical uses in palliative care education, such as use of a movie clips or art in palliative care lectures. We will do this by choosing examples of art, music, cinema, literature, television, theatre or other media with themes related to palliative care (for example: end-of-life, chronic illness, ethics, grief). We will post a commentary about the work and its relationship to palliative medicine (this may be obvious).
Our target audience is anyone in the field of (or with an interest in) palliative care, medicine, the arts, or humanities. While some information may be palliative care specific and assume a familiarity with the field, we hope that those with medical and non-medical backgrounds alike will enjoy our writings."

Dr. Brayer consistently produces interesting, informative and thought-provoking blog entries that cover a wide range of medical issues, conditions and articles. I especially love her "Medical Challenges" where she presents a photo of a condition and challenges her readers to discover the answer.
I think that Everythinghealth goes a long way to form a bridge between doctors and patients by providing valuable and credible medical information written in terms that most of us "non-doctors" can understand. Information is power, and Dr. Brayer's blog is a joy.

The list published seems very parochial and Americanocentric.
This is a shame as it ignores the rest of the world, and is less meaningful as a result.
Maybe if you are going to focus on American blogs, then you should have an international section.
I cannot see a single British blog in the list, and I think you need to look outside of your back yard.
Just a suggestion - I think there are many very good blogs outside of America.

I think you need a new category for best photo weblog. It would also qualify for best NEW patient blog.
365 days with Cushing's disease Graphically presented by Robin, a Cushing's Disease "survivor" (as she likes to say), this is a poignant, sometimes funny, sometimes introspective, and altogether fascinating look into the private life of a patient as she faces her challenges day-to-day.

I nominate www.EverythingHealth.net for the best medical blog. Written by a physician, the blog is clean and informative. She writes almost every day and mixes up the content so it is always interesting. I trust the information and always enjoy reading what she has to say. This blog deserves a reward. Check it out!
