SteriShoe, The UV Shoe Sanitizer

Thanks to a letter from a reader, we learned of a shoe disinfecting device that's been on the market for about a year. The SteriShoe, developed by Shoe Care Innovations, a Redwood City, California company, uses UVC light (280 nm-100 nm) to kill off microbes. The device, which is inserted into the shoe just like a supporting shoe tree, operates for 45 minutes and then shuts off automatically. Thought to be useful for people with nail fungus, athlete's foot, and foot complications of diabetes, the device might also help prevent embarrassing moments for people with stinky feet.

More info from the product page:

The compression sensor requires that the SteriShoe® ultraviolet shoe sanitizer be in a shoe and slightly compressed. If the SteriShoe® shoe sanitizer is treating a shoe and it is removed from the shoe, the compression sensor will be triggered and the power to the lamp will be stopped. (The heel of the shoe sanitizer is spring-loaded.)

The ambient light sensor allows the SteriShoe® ultraviolet shoe sanitizer to safely be used in open-toed shoes or sandals. The ambient light sensor pre-scans the environment before allowing the SteriShoe® shoe sanitizer to turn on. If the ambient light sensor detects a dark environment, the SteriShoe® shoe sanitizer will turn on; however, if enough light is detected it will not turn on -- this is designed to prevent UV light from escaping the shoe. Two shoe bags are provided in every box so a user can cover their open-toed shoes and sandals to provide a dark environment for the SteriShoe® shoe sanitizer.

Cool to see this here. I bought this for my husband who is a runner and it actually works. His running shoes develop less odor since he started treating them. The fact that this device comes as a shoe tree seems to make it easy for him to use it frequently. Jenny

I used this after I got laser treated for toe nail fungus. After spending a lot of money to get rid of the fungus my DPM recommended to use this device to avoid reinfection. So far so good...

When I did an online research in January to find a remedy for my son's sweaty feet I stumbled upon this. I also studied the materials on www.sterishoe.com. I bought the device earlier this month after our DPM shared his experience. He started carrying the Sterishoe in his practise. What I like the most about it is that my son doesn't mind using it. He is 12. It was hard to get him to use a spray or baking soda on his sport shoes. Great invention! Rosa

Now this is a simple idea that one can understand in a minute. My DPM talked to me about it and I just spent an hour researching online. My DPM is not selling it in his office but said he was thinking about it. He has followed the product for a year. I guess I will have to give it a shot even though I feel the unit is a bit pricey. But I looked around online and people like it alot. From my research I will buy it on the sterishoe.com website. They sell replacement bulbs as well. Amazon only sells the shoe sanitizer.

My wife got this for me from Amazon. I was pessimistic at first but then blown away how well (and quickly) it takes care of the odor. Another thing next to the odor destroying function that I particularly like is that the shoes feel less sticky. Living in CA that used to be a problem when not wearing socks in summer. What a cool way to take shoe trees to the next level.

Great post. I have three baseball playing boys. My wife hated the 10 pairs of shoes in the house. I got the sterilizer. It works super well. I got an M size. My oldest son is stuffing a pair of socks in his shoes to make it fit (the sterilizer has a compression feature for safety). First the kids thought daddy was nuts coming in with a shoe tree that has a light bulb. :-) Now they fight over it!

Expensive. But folks do seem to like it when looking at the ratings on Amazon and the comments here. What I couldn't figure out when looking at this article or at the product website is how to apply this to flip flops. My favorite pair of all times tends to develop odor. I will sleep on it and probably get one. How long does the bulb last?
