DIDGET Glucose Meter for Nintendo Portable Game Systems

Paul Wessel, a parent of a diabetic child, noticed that although his son regularly misplaces his blood glucose meter, he never forgets his Nintendo Game Boy. And so the idea for a meter that plugs into the Game Boy was born. Bayer's diabetes division will soon be releasing the DIDGET plug in module for the Nintendo DS and DS Lite based on the company's CONTOUR glucose meter. The device turns glucose testing into a game and rewards points and game features for compliance with a proper testing schedule.

The DIGIT has two modes depending on the level of customization one needs:

BASIC MODE

Simple testing right from the start. Just insert the test strip and test.

  • Fast 5-second test time.

  • Small 0.6 μL blood sample.

  • 480 test result memory.

  • Large, easy-to-read display.

  • Ready to test out of the box.

  • No Coding™ technology.

  • Auto detection of control solution.

  • 14-day average.

  • 7-day HI/LO Summary.
  • ADVANCED MODE

The same easy testing as Basic Mode plus advanced, customizable features. Advanced Mode supports the need for personalized treatment goals for children.
  • Easy personalization of HI/LO blood glucose target range setting.
  • HI/LO test result summary shows tests above and below your child's glucose target level.
  • Pre- and post-meal marker helps children quickly identify tests taken before and after eating.
  • Selectable post-meal reminder can help children remember to test after meals at a time that works for their routine.
  • 7-, 14- and 30-day averages.

It's not called Game Boy, it's Nintendo DS.

Serious problem with this device is that it is not compatible with the new nintendo DSi's the successor to the DS. Entertainment Technology moves so quickly and medical technology so slowly that the two can never be combined. This meter will only be relevant for a year.

so let me get this straight... we're going to encourage kids with diabetes to sit around and play video games?
