LifeScan Diabetes Management for Apple's iPhone

bxcvbxcvb.jpgJust the other day Apple unveiled its new iPhone 3.0 operating system, and presented some new interesting applications for the device. LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson company focusing on tools for diabetics, showed off a prototype system for diabetes management on the iPhone. By interfacing a glucose meter with the iPhone, either via wireless Bluetooth or a cable, a patient can keep track of glucose levels and look at historical patterns. Among other features, LifeScan's application on the iPhone can calculate sugar intake during meals, helping to adjust one's diet more precisely.

Watch the demo on the Apple web site by visiting: www.apple.com/iphone/preview-iphone-os. The LifeScan demo begins at approximately the 43 minute mark.

Some may want to try this so it is good to put it out in the open. Some people though are technologically challenged like me so this will have to include a good customer service and support system in place. This gadget is good because it calculates the sugar consumption in real time.

This is a good move from lifescan, however this is nothing new. This has already been done in the past. Therasense had a handspring module for the Visor that did glucose monitoring with the PDA. Also Accuchek have a Palm OS application (pocket compass) that does logbook and graph plotting from IR uploads from the meter (and accuchek pumps) to the handheld. Lifescan should make instead a 30pin ipod mudule that does glucose monitoring, and use the ipod as a meter.

"During our interview Detmers noted that the demonstration yesterday was of a prototype application that LifeScan created specifically for the event to show what medical devices can do when connected with iPhone 3.0. Detmers stressed that the demo was not meant to represent a fully-defined commercial product that is imminent. Apple asked LifeScan just a few weeks ago to create a prototype for the event and LifeScan was all too happy to participate, but a product like the one shown is not on the verge of a commercial launch."

This year is pretty reach for new releases of iPhone apps for health care industry. This is one of the fats growing sections of AppStore. We also put our 2 cents into this trend. I invite you to check out the new application UTS Diabetes for Apple iPhone:
It appeared in AppStore just about a week ago.

iPhone platform allowed us to implement several new ideas that we couldn't implement before on Palm or RIM. We even submitted this app to DiabetesMine Design Challenge 2009 this May.
