The 2008 Medical Weblog Awards Sponsored by Epocrates
Filed under: Medgadget Exclusive
, Net News

Welcome to the 2008 Medical Weblog Awards! This is the fifth year of the competition. These awards are designed to showcase the best blogs from the medical blogosphere, and to highlight the exciting and useful role medical blogs play in medicine and in society.
The categories for this year's awards are:
-- Best Medical Weblog
-- Best New Medical Weblog (established in 2008)
-- Best Literary Medical Weblog
-- Best Clinical Sciences Weblog
-- Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog
-- Best Medical Technologies/Informatics Weblog
-- Best Patient's Blog
Nominations are now accepted in the comments section of this post. When nominating, please indicate the blog's name and URL, as well as your thoughts why this particular blog deserves recognition. A blog can participate in more than one category, so please be precise which one(s).
Once we have all the nominees, Medgadget editors will sort through all the blogs, and we will select five blogs in each category based on merit, and on our own internal voting results.
The following time line will be observed:
-- Nominations will be accepted until Wednesday, December 31, 2008.
-- We will announce the finalists on Monday, January 5th, 2009
-- Polls will be open from Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 and will close 12 midnight on Sunday, January 18, 2009 (EST).
-- Winners will be announced on Friday, January 23, 2009.

This year's competition is sponsored by Epocrates, whose mobile medical software solutions have been used by hundreds of thousands of clinicians and have been recognized as the industry's leading software for many years. Epocrates is generously donating to the winner in Best Medical Weblog category the latest version of Epocrates Essentials Deluxe, a premium mobile suite of drugs, diseases and diagnostics that also features a medical dictionary, coding reference, clinical calculators and more, as well as the latest Palm® Tungsten™ E2 handheld. The package is valued at over $500.
Winners of the individual categories will receive a Palm Z22 handheld with Epocrates Essentials, a package valued at $250.
And to wrap up the prizes, all winners will receive an annual subscription to the Placebo Journal, "The Only Medical Journal That Will Make You Laugh... On Purpose!"
Of course, bragging rights are the the ultimate reward, and we wish everyone the best of luck!
Medgadget.com, as well as the individual blogs of our editors, are not eligible to participate in the awards.
Voting for the awards will be open to all, but you will only be able to vote once. (No hacking or cookie manipulation will be tolerated -- only one vote for each category from a particular IP address.)
All final decisions will be made by our editors.
Good luck to all!

Best literary medical weblog-
Notes of an Anesthesioboist
http://anesthesioboist.blogspot.com/
Written by T., and anesthesiologist, oboist and classical music enthusiast, this blog is a true gem. She ponders the meaning of life, shares the richness of hobbies, and outside interests, ponders family and motherhood and career, all from the perspective of the doctor who puts people asleep during surgery. I love this blog because it is so full of a complete and balanced love of life.
Best Medical weblog-
Musings of a Distractible Mind
http://distractible.org/
Dr. Rob, a Medicine/Pediatrics specialist practicing primary care in the southeastern US has a very popular blog. His posts are often goofy and offbeat one minute and serious and reflective the next. In either case, they are always thoughtful and reveal a physician with great heart, very concerned about how to build the physician-patient relationship and in doing the very best for patients.
Best new medical weblog-
Mothers in Medicine
http://www.mothersinmedicine.com/
It is tempting to put myself in this position but to be honest this group weblog by a bunch of physicians who are mothers has me beat hands down. They cover perspectives from specialties across the board. These women have a perspective and wisdom that I think all of us in medicine can appreciate and learn from. I love how they tie the art of parenting and the art of medicine together. They are open about the struggle they find in each and in the endless quest for balance.
Best Patient Blog
Brass and Ivory
http://brassandivory.blogspot.com/
This blog is a pillar of the Multiple Sclerosis blogging community and gives some wonderful policy info besides as she investigates a very practical problem, why are medications so @#$%! expensive. She is a great writer and runs the MS blogging carnival.
I just thought these deserved mention. They are all great.

I nominate Robin's Patient web log for Best Patient web log, It's Survive the Journey at http://survivethejourney.blogspot.com/.
Robin is a gifted and innovative educator by profession and by character. She's also a Cushing's disease patient who's created an extraordinary resource of value to both professionals and patients who are faced with the complexity, mystery and bafflement of the pituitary diagnostic process, treatment and recovery.
She's so attentive to accuracy, sublety and nuance that her blog is a model for anyone writing about any medical condition. Robin manages to convey complex topics in terms we can understand.
Not coincidentally, following years of damage from an undiagnosed pituitary tumor despite consultations with many physicians over the years, Robin has a lot of insights and suggestions for doctors, patients and about health systems and reform, too.

I am nominating Runningahospital.blogspot.com, Paul Levy's commentary on health care leadership. Paul, the CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, uses the blog to listen, to share and to educate. The topics are usually considered controversial in health care (errors in care, transparent data on performance) but also uplifting (sharing patient experiences, results from staff improvement projects) and timely. Many responses demonstrate the extent of reqadership and the interest in the subjects. His blog should be considered for Best Medical and Medical Ethics. Thanks!

Because my readers don't read professional medical blogs, I'd like to nominate my own blog for best patient's blog: http://EveryPatientsAdvocate.com/blog
I started it not long after a misdiagnosis of a rare, life-threatening lymphoma -- I was told that chemo would keep me alive an additional year to 18 months... only to figure out myself, by scouring my own medical records, that I had no lymphoma at all. My findings were later confirmed by the NIH.
A scary proposition, that. So now I do what I can to help patients navigate the system and take responsibility for their own healthcare decisions in partnership with their doctors. And I try to help doctors understand a patient's mindset, because doctors will never be able to subtract their knowledge of the system or medicine.

I submitted about four nomination that I think must have been eaten by the spam filter because of all the hyperlinks, so I guess I'll try again without links included. I do have many blogs I think are deserving that have not been mentioned.
Best Medical Weblog-
Edwin Leap, MD URL= edwinleap.com/blog
The emergency room certainly lends itself to great drama and stories. There are more emergency room professional blogs, both doctors and nurses, than any other field. The problem is that the exposure you have to horrors and abuses can also lead to cynicism. This is one physician who has by and large escaped that trap. As a published author and newspaper columnist, he is a gifted and wonderful writer. He covers policy matters as well as the human perspective. Most of all he is a wise, warm and generous soul who has never lost sight of the reason he became a doctor in the first place.
Best Literary Medical Weblog
Notes of an Anesthesioboist
URL= anesthesioboist.blogspot.com/
Best New Blog-
Mothers in Medicine
URL=mothersinmedicine.com
While I would like to keep my own competition down as a reader kindly submitted me for this category, I can't leave this blog out in good conscience. Writen by a group of physicians who are also mothers, from a wide variety of medical fields, these women have a perspective and wisdom that I think all of us in medicine can appreciate and learn from. I love how they tie the art of parenting and the art of medicine together. They are open about the struggle they find in each and in the endless quest for balance. They also have a knack for tugging at heartstrings.
Best Health Policy Blog-

A medical blog I frequently visit is:
http://sandnsurf.medbrains.net/
I'm hooked on this Doctor's enthusiasm about the future of Emergency Medicine. This Emergency Medical Physician truly cares about providing quality health care for all his patients. He prophetically anticipates their requests and needs. This is a rare find in a Physician. Most Physicians are unable to communicate with anyone outside of their medical profession. My wish is that all Physicians might take example from the lessons on this blog. Learn to communicate in a 2.0 world and in person with your patients! Snap out of it and lighten up a bit! If Physicians learn to get out of their medical "ghetto" cycle, their patients will surely appreciate them more. Another bonus they will become better Physicians!
With great fervor, I support and nominate: http://sandnsurf.medbrains.net/ to The 2008 Medical Weblog Awards Sponsored by Epocrates.

For Best Patient Blog: The New Life of e-Patient Dave
http://patientdave.blogspot.com/
"In 2007, supported by an extraordinary team of family, friends, and medical staff, I stomped the snot out of a nasty cancer that was on its way to killing me. I've since learned that the way I did it has a lot in common with the advice of the "e-patients" movement, so I've changed my blogger name from Patient Dave to e-Patient Dave."
Very powerful writings from someone who started as a patient an is becoming a strong evangelist of empowered, educated and engaged patients

Dr. Eytan provides a powerful statement about patient empowerment, and real patient-centered medicine. It is about how technology works hand in hand with a revised, contemporary view of medicine. Ted Eytan is a natural blogger.

Just discovered this health blog it's a truly eclectic experience (check the tags). Shame the visitor numbers are so low, there seems to be a growing global audience tho. It's called "Welcome to the QUAD" a mix of health, a health framework called Hodges' model, education and IT in health. The blog is at:
http://hodges-model.blogspot.com/
The home page http://www.p-jones.demon.co.uk/ has four pages of links. I was amazed when I scrolled down at:
http://www.p-jones.demon.co.uk/links.htm
If this site and blog gets a web 2.0 or 3.0.... face-lift / rewrite one to watch....
Cheers

Best Medical Weblog:
http://RunningAHospital.blogspot.com. A lot of people are saying a lot of things about healthcare change these days, but I don't know anyone who's doing more about it. And what I especially love is transparency, transparency, transparency. For g-d's sake, stop HIDING things. Sunlight will let billions of us help improve the process.
Also Best Medical Weblog:
http://TheHealthCareBlog.com. Matt's house is the place to be. It's where to get heard.
-- Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog
www.TedEytan.com. Same reasoning as RunningAHospital. Plus, Ted applies proven business thinking (sorely needed!) to healthcare, particularly Toyota LEAN methods - with emphasis on the respect aspect, which gets back to ethics too.
-- Best Medical Technologies/Informatics Weblog
http://GeekDoctor.blogspot.com. Nobody I know has done more to make MY medical data more accessible to me and anyone else I want. He's also one of the rare people who, when they disagree with me, do it gently and usually turn out to be right. That makes him (and his blog voice) really really valuable.
-- Best Patient's Blog

I would like to nominate "Running a Hospital" for Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog of 2008. I am a Northeastern University student who just finished writing a paper about how "Running a Hospital" helped create a climate of openness at BIDMC through promoting transparency within the organization. "Running a Hospital" created a new upward communication channel, allowing employees to feed back directly to the CEO. And not only has Paul's blog helped improve his institution by spreading the message of organizational transparency, but he has also invited the world to look at, and critique BIDMC's internal practices and processes. That's a giant step for healthcare, which battles issues of transparency because of issues like medical malpractice and spiraling healthcare costs.
I would also like to nominate "Running a Hospital," for Best Medical Weblog of 2008. Not only was it pioneering - one of the first healthcare blogs by a hospital executive, but his example has led other prominent healthcare leaders to follow in his footsteps, and has changed the conversation around healthcare and transparency here in Boston and elsewhere. "Running a Hospital" has allowed Mr. Levy to receive feedback from important BIDMC stakeholders, such as employees and patients, which he transparently uses to better the organization. I can't think of anything more worthy of an award!

Many thanks to Paul Levy for nominating Pallimed for Best Clinical Sciences Weblog.
Here are my nominations
Best Medical Weblog
----
Wall Street Journal Health Blog - Of course they are paid journalists so that got that going for them which is nice, but they cover a breadth of topics and do not always cover the financial side of things.
----
Agree with Running a Hospital here as well, and enough great things have been said about that blog.
----
Dr. Shock MD PhD - Dutch psychiatrist writing about a variety of topics. Always interesting. FInds eclectic articles and writes some nice commentary.
___________________________________
Best Clinical Sciences Weblog
----
Would also nominate again here: Dr. Shock MD PhD - Dutch psychiatrist writing about a variety of topics. Always interesting. FInds eclectic articles and writes some nice commentary. He is one of the few other medical bloggers that use the research blogging icon and search system, a must for any clinical sciences blog.
---------------------------------------------------------
Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog
----
Medical Futility by Thaddeus Pope (Law Professor) - Frequent updates, finds interesting cases that no one else in the medical blogosphere is talking about.
----
Bioethics Discussion Blog by Dr. Maurice Bernstein - He has been at it a while but is diversity of ethical conundrums is fantastic. Frequent commentators as well.
______________________________
Best Patient's Blog
The Mom & Me Journals - The caregiving daughter writing about her ups and downs caring for her mother who just died in early December. She has been blogging/journaling since 1999 about the caregiving for her mother who had Alzheimer's dementia. While not technically a 'patient' weblog it is as much about the patient as it is about the caregiver family, who does not have much of a voice in how health care is delivered.

Here are the blogs I nominate for a award. Most blogs are choosen because they offer a frequent update of interesting posts and are well written, informative, provide a in depth coverage (providing links is the other extreme) and/or they bring a fresh perspective.
- Best Medical Weblog ScienceRoll Im a fan of this blog. Many new items, broad, with emphasis on Web 2.0 (some posts might go more in depth, though)
- Best New Medical Weblog (established in 2008) Life in the Fast Lane. Very good blog. Good lay-out, nice style. Felt immediately attracted to it. I especially like the thorough reviews.
- Best Literary Medical Weblog Dr Shock. I would have like to nominate this blog as best Medical Weblog as well. Beautiful lay-out, very informative, pleasant to read, about many different (medical) subjects, not merely about psychiatrics (and certainly not depressing)
- Best Clinical Sciences Weblog: Clinical Cases and Images very productive, mainly based on expert opinion.
- Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog: Better Health Good balanced view, well written.
- Best Medical Technologies/Informatics Weblog: Sciencebase Very informative and broad.
- Best Patient's Blog: ButYouDontLookSick because of the name alone...

I stumbled upon "Notes of an Anesthesioboist" http://anesthesioboist.blogspot.com by accident, while googling for blogs written by wives of physicians. It quickly became one of my favorite reads. I check it daily. As the wife of a family practice physician, I gain great insights into my husband's medical practice from author T. My husband works 12-14 hour days and rarely wants to talk about it when he comes home. T's writings give me understanding into his workday, which helps me to be a better wife. Not only is she a gifted writer, she is well rounded in many aspects of life that I relate to. Music, books, family, motherhood, recipes, travel, politics, (although I don't always agree with her) and medicine are all a part of my life too. Frequently I purchase the books and music T recommends. T's blog is very educational. I'm always learning something new from her. With high regard and respect, I recommend "Notes of an Anesthesioboist" for "Best Literary Medical Weblog".

The Aesthetic Blog http://www.plasticsurgerypractice.com/blog
Published by PSP magazine, The Aesthetic Blog started in 2008 under the guiding hand of editor Jeffrey Frentzen, who has published a combination of news and opinion about the plastic surgery field. The frequent posts on ethics in the cosmetic surgery field are spot on, and Frentzen has carved out a niche in this often tight-lipped and reclusive medical field with his well-written and timely blogging. He writes primarily for doctors, not usually patients, unlike most blogs that focus on plastic surgery. Also, there are no "celebrity plastic surgery horror stories," instead the topic stays pretty close to peer issues involving doctors.

Running for My Life: Fighting Cancer One Step at a Time
http://runnerwrites.blogspot.com/
Blogger Ronni Gordon is a 54-year-old journalist and mother of three who in 2003 was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). She sought care after feeling unaccountably winded during a 10K road race. Running, tennis and biking have been important parts of her recovery. In her blog, started between her second and third bone marrow transplants, Ms. Gordon gives a clear-eyed, blow-by-blow account of "falling down and getting up, coping and coming back." Her quiet humor and determination to slay cancer inspire while her descriptions of harrowing cancer treatments fascinate. A must read. Like the growing number of people who follow her blog, you'll find yourself rooting for her to win this race.

It probably isn't appropriate to pimp one's own blog, so apologies if I shouldn't or I'm out of time.
It would be really good to get a feel as to whether this blog is any good in any of your categories. Its a UK blog, but its new, Medical, Literary and obviously is not hotting the US radar yet.

The Last Psychiatrist should be in the patient category rather than medical ethics, since he isn't a medical professional. Now that's an ethics problem right there. ;-)

If I could, I would like to nominate my blog, started last spring. It's called simply, Medical Ethics.
As the name would suggest, it's about medical ethics. It is updated 4-5 times a week. I also cover medical ethics for the Toronto Star newspaper.
As a newspaper reporter, I try to keep opinion out of the blog, instead providing a place for people to learn and think about ethical issues surrounding medicine. I am particularly intered in access issues, new medical research and medical tourism.
I often cover issues for the blog before writing for the newspaper, making the blog the go-to place for ethics updates.
