WHO Warns...Just Say No to E-cigarettes!

Mark Twain said: "To cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did. I ought to know because I've done it a thousand times." Breaking nicotine addiction remains difficult despite the many aids available. Too often, as in Twain's case, success is short lived. Smoking cessation is a huge business and the "e-cigarette" is one of the more recent products attempting to break in to this lucrative market. Complete with wisps of smoke, a glowing LED end and a piezoelectric nebulizer that vaporizes nicotine contained in the replaceable cartridges, it sounds like the ideal solution to quell the physical, social and chemical triggers that lead to relapse.

Sound too good to be true? Well, on September 19th, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned against using electronic cigarettes, saying "there is no evidence to prove they are safe or helped smokers break the habit... Toxicological tests and clinical trials have not been performed on this product."

These devices are mostly sold on the internet and produced by unregulated companies (often in China). The World Health Organization became very concerned when they saw that some manufacturers were using the WHO name/logo on their packages/website and feared this could be construed as an endorsement by the organization.

Douglas Bettcher, acting director of the WHO's Tobacco Free Initiative, said "It has really taken countries and the WHO by surprise. It has been a product that appeared very suddenly on the market in a short period of time."

WHO press release: Marketers of electronic cigarettes should halt unproved therapy claims...

It should be pointed out that the Tobacco arm of the WHO receives 70% of its funding from the pharmaceutical companies who make the NRT products that the WHO considers "legitimate". Its also seems convenient that the only people who would have the cash to carry out the required tests so that E cigarettes can become accepted by the WHO would be Big Pharma.

Not that I'm saying E Cigarettes are definitely 100% safe, but its something to think about before taking an organization's word too seriously.

Every kind of addiction is bad for health, either it is smoking or taking drugs through injection. To me E Cigarettes are not 100% safe. It also do some damage to our health. So the best way is to give up smoking.

They weren't designed to help people quit. They never stated that. They're designed for people who do want to smoke, but want to smoke without taking in hordes of terrible chemicals, and rip up their throat and lungs.

Also, the one of the biggest quirks about these in the US among other places is the fact that it is not smoking at all. It is vapors. That means if you feel like whipping it out in the middle of a california resturant, or movie theater, it's perfectly legal. (and odor/second hand damage free)

The WHO warning certainly makes sense.

As a smoking cessation specialist, I find it unfortunate that clever marketing is deceiving people about the dangers of the highly controversial e-cigarette.

Among other negative factors, the electronic cigarette is still pumping big amounts of nicotine into the smokers lungs!

And while nicotine alone may not be causing cancer, US research has shown that nicotine supports tumor growth and metastasis, and can trigger exisiting latent cancer cells to become very agressive.

Nicotine can also help push breast cancer cells into other (healthy) parts of the body.

E-cigarettes can hardly be called "healthy" - as their marketers claim on their myspace page.

And this product is perpetuating smoking behaviour in smokers.

THE ONLY THING I WANT TO KNOW IS EXACTLY WHAT IS IN THIS E-CIG-I AM USING IT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO SMOKING,NOT NECESSARILY TO QUIT-OBVIOSLY WE KNOW NICOTLNE IS STILL BAD FOR YOU,BUT THEY DO GIVE YOU THE OPTION OF NOT USING ANY-BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS IN THE ATOMIZER

For StopSmoking:

I don't know if nicotine causes health concerns, but if it does, then why does the WHO approve of nicotine patches and gum? Is the WHO saying one type of nicotine is okay but the other isn't? The two main ingredients in the Ecig vapor are nicotine and Propylene glycol (PG). First of all, PG is also used in smoke machines that you see at concerts and the such, so that obviously is not harmful, and I'd much rather get my nicotine from something that doesn't also have 400 different cancer causing chemicals, and doesn't produce second hand smoke. And since I make my own "nicotine juice" I know exactly what goes in it.

The bottom line is, I'm still going to smoke ecigs and there is no one who can say that ecigs cause the same or more damage than traditional cigs. All the haters are only upset because it's not taxed or their not getting any kickback money from it.

E-Cigarettes are not very well understood by alot of article writers. First and foremost, there is no vaporization of anything in an E-Cigarette. The Atomizer simply creates heat. the way you turn a atomizer on is by suction, so you create the suction, turning on the Atomizer, so now you are sucking heat towards your mouth which passes through a pad in the filter (cartridge) which is filled with liquid nicotine and propylene glycol. It is basically like using a fog machine at a concert except in place of a human's mouth suction there is a fan on the back of the fog machine which blows air out of the machine which heats up the atomizer and the hot air passes through a chamber of propylene glycol.

Propylene Glycol is used as a food additive to perserve and enhance taste. it is also used to defrost air planes because of its density. it is also used in alot of moisturizers and beauty products we use everyday on our body. It is also used in food coloring. It is a type of alcohol, a viscous sweet tasting liquid.

E-Cigarettes are definately in my opinion healthier than smoking traditional cigarettes. sure nicotine is bad for you and may lead to progression of tumors, but the object of the e-cigarette is to help one quit by lowering doses of nicotine over time until the urge is no longer there OR allow smokers to smoke in areas where they normally wouldnt be able to smoke.

WHO only worries about the regulation of the nicotine, the grade of it, the steps made to produce it, the content and most of all the ingesting of it into your lungs.

I personally dont care, because it has to be better than the 4000 chemicals in traditional cigarettes, BENZENE, FORMALDEHYDE, AMMONIA, ACETONE, TAR, CARBON MONOXIDE, ARSENIC

Electronic cigarettes are the next big "thing". I first need to point out that there is no heat produced as stated by some folks. This holds true at least for the Ruyan brand. You can see info and test results at www.getruyanusa.com. The e-cig works when air flow is detected by a sensor, which activates a SONIC atomizer (Absolutely No Heat is Used!) that vaporizes a liquid solution stored in the mouthpiece. They are a great product and will have huge potential in the near future.
