M-POWERED Car for Diabetics

At this year's ADA scientific session at Moscone Center in San Francisco, Medtronic Diabetes unveiled its new M-POWERED car, a Lincoln sedan equipped with a system that wirelessly incorporates a patient's continuous glucose monitor with a dashboard to make driving safer for those who can go from 120 to 60 mg/dl within a matter of seconds.

From the statement issued to Medgadget by a company rep:

Medtronic Diabetes unveiled its new M-POWERED concept car at this year's American Diabetes Association (ADA) annual meeting in San Francisco, June 6-10. The M-POWERED concept car would allow a person with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) device to receive readings of their blood sugar through both audio and visual cues from the car's dashboard.

Wonder if it distinguishes between a passenger's BG vs the driver's BG.........

How accurate is this actually going to be? The wrist watches that came out to continually monitor blood sugar apparently weren't that accurate, and that was worn on the body. How is a car going to accurately monitor blood sugar; via the steering wheel? Would Medicare and private insurance cover the cost of this car under a medical necessity? I would like more information...

Diabetic patients who monitor their bllod sugar regularly and stick to their diet should not have to worry about a hypoglycemic emergency. If your blood sugar is that out of control or your have regular episodes where your bllod sugar could go from 120 to 60, then it's my opinion those diabetic patients have no bussiness operating a motor vehicle. Just my opinion.
