Prosthetics Go Olympic

Oscar Pistorius is entering history, and making Medgadget editors very happy, as the double leg amputee won an appeal to participate in the Beijing Olympics and run against properly legged runners. This was surprising news following last January's decision by the International Association of Athletics Federations to not let Pistorious run.

I think he should be allowed to run. But as the WaPo brings up, where do we draw the line when technology starts making those who are disabled more abled than everyone else?

I think it will make for an interesting competition. I applaud the guy for getting out there and trying.

Sports is all about who is the best human with "original equipment" -- no fancy sport suits to make you go faster, no steroids, no bionics or movement-assisting devices -- just one human versus another. Anything that gives one athlete a considerable or different advantage over another should not be allowed. Everything must be as equal as possible so that it's a competition between people, and not a competition of technology.

Marq,

So skiers should all have the same skis, and pole vaulters should all use the same pole, and tennis players should all use the same racket?
In the end, if the competitors really want to, they can chop their legs off and attach better ones. Go medtech!
