ReWalk Exoskeleton

Another day, another exoskeleton. Designed to help paraplegics to walk again, ReWalk™ is the product of Israeli company Argo Medical Technologies, Ltd. Massachusetts based SolidWorks Corp, whose 3D CAD software was used to develop the device, is reporting about the exoskeleton:

An innovative alternative to wheelchairs designed in SolidWorks® 3D CAD software lets paralyzed people do what was previously considered impossible: stand, walk, and climb stairs.

Designed by Israeli consultancy Taga for medical device company Argo Medical Technologies, Ltd., the ReWalk exoskeleton is a light, wearable brace support suit featuring DC motors at the joints, rechargeable batteries, an array of sensors, and a computer-based control system. Users wear a backpack device and braces on their legs, and select the activity they want from a remote control. A sensor on the chest determines the torso’s angle and guides the legs to move forward or backward to maintain balance.

“There are a lot of challenges to design something that imitates a human walking, including universal fit for a broad range of user height and weight measurements, as well as a low profile that is both contemporary and user friendly,” said Assaf Barel, design engineer at Taga. “SolidWorks enabled us to be creative in addressing all of these challenges. The finished product is strong, compact, lightweight, and works like a human body.”

Taga standardized on SolidWorks for all new product development, including a range of medical, consumer, and equipment products for customers like General Electric, Phillips, and Comverse. Taga used SolidWorks to design the ReWalk based on a rough prototype from its inventor, Dr. Amit Goffer. SolidWorks gave engineers the time and capability to discover innovative approaches to translating the original prototype into a working model.

SolidWorks simplified design iterations and helped ensure accuracy as engineers constantly refined concepts to accommodate variables such as leg brace length, joint angle range, and the amount of pressure the joints can withstand. SolidWorks’ mass properties functionality enabled Taga engineers to see exact weight calculations as they designed the exoskeleton to be light enough to maneuver. COSMOSXpress™ allowed engineers to test the strength and durability of different load-bearing components to ensure the exoskeleton would hold up when users bend, stand up, and climb stairs.

All of Taga’s subcontractors use SolidWorks software, which, along with eDrawings® e-mail-enabled design communication tool, makes collaboration easy and smooth. Having teams work on native file formats also reduces costly and time-consuming errors.

The ReWalk exoskeleton is currently undergoing clinical trials. Taga expects it to be ready for general availability in 2009.

Love the concept. These are the types of developments that fuel my passion for biomedical engineering advances. I've seen this concept for soliders trekking many miles - fatigue prevention.

The next ten to twenty years is going to be an exciting time in technology for the disabled. There's plans for eye glasses to give sight to the blind, the robotic replacement fingers (that's in development and limited trials) and also there's a wheel chair that goes from a four wheel to a two-wheel standing contraption (think segway for the disabled) and its actually ON THE MARKET now... And now this, the ability for a paraplegic to actually walk...amazing..

You dream it, someone will eventually build it...

Love the idea, but not the continued discription that it will help paraplegics walk again. My son is a quadriplegic C4/5 and can walk on an adapted walker a few steps at a time. Don't limit this product to Para's. Some Quads are just as capable to walk, but don't have all the fine sensory in their hands that Para's have. However, they can still grip.

Can't wait for this administration to end - praying hard that the next one will be opened minded about new technology and bio-technology!

Kind regards
T. Carter

Fascinating stuff. The inventor of this is a Godsend.

Innovations such as these (Rewalk) should be funded and even subsidized for the poor and needy people by the government machinery.

Keep on telling people that in order to be normal, you have to be "upright". Give me a break. I am so sick of the negative conotation that society places on disability. Yes, I am disabled.

I must say, I couldnt have gotten paralized at a better time, I would like to thank everyone who made it possable. Rewalk will be key, with the combination of Embronic stemcells, we will be walking in no time.Ladys and gentleman, God gave us the gift to stand, and I dont care what you say Normal is standing, and noone should give up and except this. If anyone with a Spinalcord injury, and other neuro digenarating disabilitys can reach me at my email ''amartayan@hotmail.com'' I would gladlly show you all the great improvements that have been made from stemcells, and I would gladlly show you vidieos of people who are walking and regained 100%bladder and bowels. I would also gladlly tell you my experiance with stemcells. Its important we all stay together and pass on information.

I have just read about this amazing REWALK, and I think it is the answer to my prayers for my daughter, Michelle. She sent me the link to read, and i would like to know more about stem cell treatment. The only frightening thing about this REWALK is the price. What does it cost for a para to own one of these, and does someone come and instruct on how to use, and supervise the person until it is second nature to use this?????? Please tell me it is available in Canada or USA. We are in Canada. Can you give an estimate cost anyone??? Thank God for modern science. I am looking forward to the next ten to twenty years of progress for parapalegic, quadrapalegics, and anyone with skeletel disabilities.

My husband got paralizedwhen we were teenagers. I never really even thought of a life with someonein a chair but it wasn't like I was against it either most people you come into contact with would never marry someone with a diability that they were not even dating when the person was injured nd that is the problem I have with my life for me I could ever picure myself with anyone but him in a chair or not and when people say to me don't you ever miss the life you could have had I wonder how these people can live with themselves after a thouht like that.

The man that developed this wonderful machine of its prototype is a true miracle of GOD not many people could do this. Knowing that he would never be able to use it himsel.
