P.L.E.A.S.E. = Painless Laser Epidermal System

Pantec Biosolutions AG, a company based in Liechtenstein, has just unveiled its laser-based, needle free, and painless intra epidermal drug delivery technology called P.L.E.A.S.E.®. The platform, introduced at the recently held Drug Delivery Partnerships 2008 conference in San Diego, is designed to enhance delivery of large molecular weight drugs and vaccines via specialized laser micro-poration technology.

The company explains:

LEDDT™ (Laser Easy Drug Delivery Technology) is a novel transdermal delivery method for high molecular weight drugs. A handheld laser device creates controlled aqueous micro pores in the epidermis. Due to the special features of the device the micro pores do not reach the dermis, where nerves and blood vessels reside. An intelligent graphical user interface guarantees simple and safe use by the medical personnel or the patient, who can use the device without supervision.

A special laser source ablates outer skin tissue painless in a highly controlled and accurate fashion.

  • Very short pulses practically eliminate thermal damage

  • No carbonisation, only fast ablation of skin tissue

  • Very accurate skin ablation in 5-10 µm steps

  • Scanner optics allows flexible formation of pore arrays
  • The LEDDT™ - device allows fine tuning of pore properties (number and depth) to a therapeutic need for a specific drug dose.

The company sees its product making headway in such areas as pain control, diabetes management, and in vitro fertilization.

As it says, 'can be used without supervision', I am wondering if there were considerations of this being used in an abusive way (i.e. intravenous narcotics or abuse of other such substances, malicious harm by another). If true, then there would be little to no physically obvious ways of detecting this misuse. Well, as far as I understand it.
