Morgellons Disease: A New Skin Infection? CDC Wants to Know
Filed under: in the news...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is launching a study, in conjunction with Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Division of Research, to investigate whether multiple reports of a strange skin disease, that some call Morgellons, are true. ABC News is planning to run a story tonight on "Nightline" (11:35 ET), and has released the following statement about its upcoming program:
People with the condition, referred to as Morgellons disease, say they have fibers and other inorganic material growing out of their skin."We earnestly want to learn more about this unexplained illness which impacts the lives of those who suffer from it," said Dr. Michele Pearson, principal investigator leading the study for CDC, in a press release. "Those who suffer have questions, and we want to help them."
"We have a team of epidemiologists, laboratorians and pathologists to carry out the study," Pearson said...
In 2006, a number of Morgellons sufferers told ABC News in interviews that when they consulted doctors, they received diagnoses that they called wrong or dismissive. Brandi Koch, the wife of former Major League Baseball player Billy Koch, said that she felt as if she was living in a horror movie, claiming she had colored fibers coming out of her skin.
Koch, of Clearwater Beach, Fla., said that her life was good until one day in the shower when she noticed something strange -- tiny fibers running through her skin.
"The fibers look like hair, and they're different colors," Koch said.
Koch said she knows that what she experienced "sounds crazy," but it's true. "If I had a family member call me up and say, 'I have this stuff,' I'd say, 'I'm sending a straitjacket over. You need some help,'" she said.
From the CDC statement:
The investigation may take 12 months or longer to complete. Initially investigators will identify and recruit participants and collect detailed information on participants' symptoms and potential factors that may contribute to the condition. Later eligible participants will undergo detailed clinical evaluations, including a general medical examination, dermatologic examination, mental health examination, skin biopsies, and multiple blood tests.

I do not understand why the CDC is spending money "to know if it is a real disease or not". Why has the issue not been settled in peer-reviewed journals? I read about it today, the whole thing smells very funny.

PS: for having seen hundreds of dust particles under a fluorescent microscope, I can tell you that the fluorescence image you show is a lint.

It comes from a plant that was genetically altered to contain human genes. The plants are spreading, people eat them and become infected. It is probably from a tuberous plant like a carrot or potato. The fibers are the roots.

While sufferers and entomologists alike understandably prefer not to believe that a 6 legged critter could be accountable for symptoms of itching, crawling and biting, reports of Collembola infesting humans have been made by a variety of qualified scientists and reported to the literature again and again. http://collembolareferences.blogspot.com/
Wednesday's broadcast on mysterious diseases included descriptions of people believing they had bugs in their skin but failed to mention anything about published research and the fact that the skin symptoms may not be as mysterious as they think.
Collembola, also known as springtails or snow fleas, are described in the authoritative "Biology of Springtails" by Hopkin as among the most widespread and abundant terrestrial arthropods on earth.
Collembola are referred to as the earliest fossil proof of insect life on the planet. Why should people care? Collembola are being found in human hair and skin. Infestations appear to be communicable from particular environmental conditions or from one person to another, and there is no known cure once a person is infested.
A Pennsylvania woman acquired symptoms after a hyperinfestation of springtails occurred in her home following a landscapers application of mulch to plantings around the foundation of her home.
A Texas man actually had Collembola identified from skin samples he delivered to the entomologist. The same entomologist insisted it would be impossible for them to cause such symptoms even though reports of this had been published by his peers on numerous occasions.
A recently found 1955 report to the medical literature, apparently lost through the years is but another example of documented evidence on the ability of Collembola to infest or colonize humans.
http://www.headlice.org/news/2005/august/tiny_bugs_wreak_havoc.htm
In 2004, the National Pediculosis Association reported Collembola in skin scrapings collected from 18 of 20 research participants in its study published in the Journal of the New York Entomological Society at http://www.headlice.org/news/2004/delusory.htm.
Some Collembola experts disagreed with the NPA's research findings, insisting that it was impossible for Collembola to live in human skin.
Others assert that there is more of a scientific basis for Collembola in humans than the entomologist and physician's overwhelming acceptance of a psychiatric explanation (Delusions of Parasitosis) for people's sensations of biting, stinging and crawling in their skin.
"The NPA had the article translated from Swedish and the first English translation of the Bryk report is now available on the NPA website, www.headlice.org/swedish, with the permission of the Swedish medical journal Lakartidningen.

My life has been upside down since I started having these strange itching sensations. My son's girl friend shared what she learned from the CBS newscaste. I was so thankful to know other people are having the same problem. In October, my family doctor , Michael Remines, thought I was having a "mood" disorder" and offered anti-depressants. I knew I was not having any such problems. What I did know was that I had stayed in a motel near the hospital where my husband was a patient and I had purchased new underwear from Walmart in Charleston, WV. Nothing else was different in my life...Approximately 1 week later the symptoms started on my stomach. By mid-late November the "rash"/horrible itching/crawly/squiggly sensation had spread to my buttocks. By Christmas, I was so worn out from lack of sleep that my life started coming to a halt. The sensation had spread to my arms. By mid-January my legs were covered.
I teach school and thought maybe I had scabies. Three different doctors told me that I did not have scabies but I was so insistent that they prescribed first Lindain (spelling?) then Permethian (spelling?) (We both bathed in the Permethian.) Neither helped. We bombed our entire house to kill whatever it was. That didn't help. I have washed clothing - all clothing - as many as 3-5 loads per day to kill whatever it is. We have used bleach, borax, OdoBan, scalding hot water, you name it on our clothing and bedding.
I am so frustratedd with doctors right now that I could scream.
I have always been a high energy person but this has modified my life to the point that I just have enough energy to wash the clothing. Now my husband is broken out. We have always bathed everyday. Now we bath 2 and 3 times a day and we have turned to alternative cures.
For the past 3 weeks I have been finding small specks of turquoise blue, black or red on my skin after I cover my body with a heavy lotion. I have actually kept the paper with these on it so that I could show someone but didn't know who to show for fear they would think I was a nut of some sort.
I have had millions of small bumps, bleeding spots, large areas that look like I have been scalded, and hard, hot knots. I have also had a few spots that started growing in abnormal growth patterns but when I squeezed or cut it in half and kept coating it with Neem Tree Oil, the spots withered away. Anywatm when touched, I hurt clear to the bone. I get big welts whenever I wear elastic or tight fitting clothing. One grandson broke out. His brother and sister and parents did not. My other son and his girl friend have also been fighting something like me but neither got as bad as me. She actually had 2 scrappings to see if she had scabbies but tested negative both times. Before knowing all this, I told the family not to come around me because I thought I was contagious.
And now, all I know is I am embarrassed for anyone to see my arms or hands. It is winter so I can keep the rest of me covered.
Out of frustration, our doctor finally prescribed Predisone and referred us to a dermatologist, Dr. Valequez, in Beckley, WV. We see him on Thursday, January 31st.

In response to Ann Pauley posting-
Ann,
I too had similar problems. Here is a suggestion that helped me resolve mine which turned out to be Springtail infestation of my home. Go to a Do It Yourself Pest Control store in your area or go on the web and get some Glue Boards. Make sure they are not black becuase you won't be able to see what sticks to them. Put 2 or 3 in every room of your house. Check them in the mornings since these bugs crawl at night. These bugs look like small black specs some no bigger than a spec of pepper. Take the sample on the Glue Board to your local IFAS (Food and Agriculture) office and have an entomologist identify it. If it is Springtail, they can recommend the chemicals you need to use in and out of your home to kill them. I hired a professional company to spray my house and it took many sprayings to get rid of these things. They say they don't bite but I beg to differ. I think they get in your clothes and even laundry machines don't seem to kill all of them. They are sensitive to dry conditions so I bought 2 dehimidifiers and run them all day and night and keep the air on in the house all the time. They will get in your hair (wash with Coal Tar Shampoo) and they will also get in damp moist areas of your body. I too had recently bought underwear at Target when my problem began. My first problem was itching in that area which I atributed to a minor yeast infection but it gradually spread to the rest of my body I think because these insects were getting on me inside my home. They love mulch and damp conditions under stepping stones and pavers. Good luck. If this is your problem, you will have relief for the most part in a week or less after spraying.

OK This is real because I have it and have attempted my own study since none of the Drs. believe what you tell them and they immediately think your a raving lunatic, which if someone told me about what I am going through I would immediately think they were insane. No doubt we're gonna have an epidemic here that will cost our government big bucks It's just gonna run rampart before people have to go to the Dr telling them their symptoms and in turn not getting any real answers as to what it is or how to stop it. You will be misdiiagnosied .Victims will have medical professionals accessing them incorrectly while being laughed at and humiliated thus causing a greater period of time before the CDC truly gets involved. This is a torturous skin condition that is contaious and someone must get the ball rolling before the majority of people in certain areas can infect others unknowingl causing an epidemic in our country..I know it sounds like sci-fi but ITS REAL. The afflicted and possible victims must push the CDC to take this threat seriously ,.The only way I found out what was happening was that I bought a jjewlelers loop and looked at the part of my body that suddenly felt las if a pin was jabbing me and I had the sensation of a feather being dragged across my skin, you can literally feel these things crawling on your skin.Once again I gotta reiterate that I'm not crazy nor are a good percentage of the victims. Open your eyes and mouths and fight for reseach before your life becomes a living sci -fi movie.

I tried 3-4 drops oregano essential oil combined with 3-4 drops tea tree essential oil in handful of salt and a tremendous number of black specks came out of my pores. My personal belief from 2 year experience is that the thousands of people reporting this have all or some of the same symptoms. As for me, I believe it to have been started when I worked in a room that was gutted and was exposed to zoonotic ringworm and collembola, along with other fungi.
I have found that staying as dry as possible has helped me 95% and I had a horrible case covering most of my body with literally hundreds of nightmare lesions with large rings and deep pits and blue streaks under my skin. I would take a bath and put in the 2 above oils (just a few drops) and handful of salt, and the lesions would soften. I would tear the rings off from around the ulcer and underneath the rings was what seems like different size skin type granules. Once I cleaned all of these out (most baths lasting at least 2 hours) I would rinse in clear water with about 3 drops of tea tree, 3 drops of essential oregano and a hand full of salt and leave it on my skin and get out and blow dry all my skin so as not to use towels. I then put on Lamisil all over my body, and sprayed the liquid lamisil on my scalp and also used powdered Desenex and Ting spray with Miconazole in the athletes foot department. This has really helped me so much it is unbelievable. I do spray my home with the ting. I have seen a lot of collembola from miniscule to 1/3 inch long, or at least a insect or crustacean that looks sort of like a tiny white shrimp. This is a combination of things and everyones experience may be different. I wash everything in original Tide soap. I am now looking for what kills collembola. I have no trouble finding them. I just use black spandex cut in squares and clean all of my skin. They show up white and the spandex material grabs them off my skin. I have all the samples anyone could want. Someone will listen and understand soon, just hold on. I believe people are scared and don't want to be blamed. I do not believe that this has to be anyones fault. I have worked in the medical profession for 30 years, am not a doctor, but am well versed in medical language. Also, I can put a drop of essential oregano and tea tree in hot water in a bowl and put a towel over my head and breath the vapors to rid nasal passages, etc., of unwanted mites or whatever the miniscule creatures are. I can get the samples off my skin and find tremendous relief wiping off my dry body with black spandex. I hope this truly helps someone. God bless you all. This will be conquered and I believe soon!

I must add to the first part of my previous email in the first paragraph that the tea tree essential oil and oregano essential oil with handful of salt were in my bath water. I washed my hair and face first in the bath water, so as to have the cleanest water possible for hair and face, then proceeded with the rest.
Also the Lamisil, Ting powder spray (Miconazole) and Desenex Powder I bought in the athelete's foot section of walmart.
In my research on line I have learned that dermatophytes of a fungus are a parasitic fungus that almost seem like a mite, but they are not, they are a plant that gets on skin.
Another thing, I had lots of white spores coming off me at the beginning from the ringworm...I covered my body with Lamisil or the Equate walmart brand. Can spray house with 3-4 drops of oregano essential oil and tea tree essential oil in water in spray bottle all over house.
Still have not come up with a complete kill for the collembola in my skin and scalp, but feel sure I will. Witch hazel rubbed into my scalp, in addition to the liquid 1 oz lamisil, (at different times), enabled me to comb dead collembola out of my scalp. Just an update.

I have recently contracted what I believe to be collembola. I have had this for about 5-6 weeks now. I believe I got it by handling some bark for a large cleanup job. I'm not sure though. In the past three days, I have been applying Neutrogena Alpha Hydroxy face lotion, and it seems to provide a great amount of relief due to the acid. As soon as I use it, the crawling sensation subsides and then black specs and small string like material appear on the surface of my skin. Also, I have now used a Neurtrogena Salicylic Acid facial scrub to scrub my entire body. Both the facial lotion and scrub are of the the Healthy Skin Line. I have them primarily on my arms and stomach, but now they are spreading to my legs, feet, pelvis and face. I am very very fearful of how this will affect my three children, two boys 9 and 2 and a baby girl 10 months.

Hi,
Oh, my goodness... We began to battle what we thought was lice, now I am beginning to think it is this... Everything I pulled out of my daughters hair was those stringy black things no bigger than a man's shavings when he has a shadow beard. I bought a non-toxic lice kill treatment at Walmart, can't remember what it is called, it says #1 Pediatrician recommended. I not only treated my daughters hair but also treated her entire body, very soon after putting it on her body all these black string like things began to come out of her pores. I latter that night became very curious and grabbed a kids toy.
The "EYE CLOPS", this is a microscopic imaging toy that hooks up to the t.v. It has a bright light, camera and multi zoom function from 100x, 200x and 400x. I began to search my body, then happened upon a very strange sight, a string like object just below the surface of my skin moving around. I thought am I crazy did I really just see that thing. I then began to think perhaps all the crawling feelings I have been having on my body might be related. So anywhere that I had that crawly feeling I put the scope and sure enough every single time I found one of those things only they were not all black, some where Red, Blue and Black. I caught two that were very active, one in fact did a complete 360 in about a one second period. I wonder how they can move that freely under our skin. This was very interesting to me, all the while very bothersome.. I realize now that perhaps I have been battling the wrong pest. You can bet that I will be heading back to Walmart to buy more of that product, my entire family will be undergoing body rubs of this for a while and I hope that we can "eradicate" these terrible pest's once and for all. I am going to give every one in the house only a few outfits to wear, so to keep the laundry load down. Will be washing floors daily and at least heating all bedding every day. Also have already bought vinyl bed covers will be putting those on soon. Lucky for me I have cement floors, that should help, or at least I hope. I would think that anyone trying to get rid of this bad stuff may have to resort to ridding their house of carpet, (I am not an expert on this but it just seems like it would make good since). I wonder if this transfers to pets??? Oh, boy what a battle ahead we have. I have to figure this out soon. I have bites all over and have that constant crawling feeling all over my entire body, this is terrible stuff. I believe it is even in my left ear, Ouch...
Good luck to all you out there dealing with this. If anyone has an effective treatment that rids you of this please let me know, thanks....

This is definitely a REAL CONDITION. Even those these bugs, the collembola (more commonly known as "Springtails") may not be able to bite us, what's to stop them from crawling on us and licking their feet after they walk over whatever's on our heads (oil coming from our follicles, dead skin cells, all naturally occurring stuff that they would enjoy tasting, eating, and living on)? Think of a cat licking its paws after it's killed and eaten a bug off the ground-- you get the picture. We are potential food sources for these bugs, even though we can barely see them. And if you go to sleep with a wet head, you're a water source, too.
Every single heartless MD who didn't do a full workup on their patients should be sued, and if you can find a copy of the Scientific American Offprint "Life on the Human Skin" then read it. It's old, but that information has never changed. The same bugs are living on us, and nowadays, probably more species of bugs.

I read that Morgellon's fiber sufferers can get these strands out with a bath of bleach water. I have read that anti-parasitic meds help. These fibers are alleged to be something like a fungi or mold that can live in the skin and can only be seen with a high resolution microscope. They say the fibers don't burn until about 1700F. Some say it's from genetically modified food, plus a chemical exposure and a source of water that has been infected with black mold or fungus.... AND a virus. CA, TX and FL have the greatest outbreaks. Even if you have city water that does not guarantee black mold isn't getting through. A water softner, water heater, your pipes, even a single faucet can become infected. Have your water tested. Beware of seafood and fish farmed from sewage. Some believe this is from sewage. Think about fish oil, coral calcium, seaweed and such - it can be infected. Odwalla and green drinks I believe exasperate the condition. Check to make sure all personal care products, esp organic, are fresh. For me, I found black cotton clothes (nighties) that were laced with small red luminescent fibers. I was developing the itch and removed these pieces and the itching stopped. These fibers burned, BUT they were not living in my skin - yet. I've read the fibers are +similar+ to those in cash. The fibers in cash were meant to stop counterfeiting. The payload in these fibers are different, but extremely similar. Search Morgellon's / Morgellon / Cause / Cure / Super Scabies (too) /

Make sure to be careful with the bleach. I believe the person that wrote the accidental finding didn't indicate the quantity, but I believe you; 1) need to get uncontaminated bleach from a spa store. Regular Chlorox contains petro per some reports (as does some Vinegar), and 2) measure the bleach similar to treating water - a cap or so. Again - BE CAREFUL! God Bless!
