The 2007 Medical Weblog Awards Sponsored by ScrubsGallery.com
Filed under: Medgadget Exclusive
, Net News

Welcome to the fourth annual Medical Weblog Awards! This competition is designed to recognize the very best from the medical blogosphere, and to highlight the diversity and excitement of the world of medical blogs.
The categories for this year's awards will be:
-- Best Medical Weblog
-- Best New Medical Weblog (established in 2007)
-- Best Literary Medical Weblog
-- Best Clinical Sciences Weblog
-- Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog
-- Best Medical Technologies/Informatics Weblog
-- Best Patient's Blog
Nominations are now accepted in the comments section of this post. When nominating, please indicate the blog's name and URL, as well as your thoughts why this particular blog deserves recognition. A blog can participate in more than one category, so please be precise which one(s). Once we have all the nominees, Medgadget editorial staff will sort through all the blogs, and we will select five blogs in each category based on merit, and on our own internal voting results. Everyone from our editorial staff will be involved with a selection process. Joining us will be our "freelancers": Joshua Schwimmer from Kidney Notes and Enrico Cantu from Mexico Medical Student.
The following timeline will be observed:
-- Nominations will be accepted until Monday, December 31, 2007.
-- We will announce the finalists on Monday, January 7th, 2008
-- Polls will be open from Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 and will close at midnight on Sunday, January 20, 2008 (PST).
-- Winners will be announced on Wednesday, January 23, 2008.

The generous folks at ScrubsGallery.com are providing winners with some seriously exciting prizes this year. The winner of the 2007 Best Medical Weblog award gets a shiny new Amazon Kindle wireless reading device.
Winners in other categories, in addition to bragging rights, will be awarded with the latest edition of The Cambridge Illustrated History of Medicine (Cambridge University Press; New Ed edition).
Medgadget.com, as well as the individual blogs of our editors, are not eligible to participate in the awards.
Voting for the awards will be open to all, but you will only be able to vote once. (No hacking or cookie manipulation will be tolerated -- only one vote for each category from a particular IP address.)
All final decisions will be made by our editors.
Good luck to all!

There are many wonderful medical blogs that deserve recognition. My picks:
Best Medical Blog:
Junkfood Science - it's from a nurse, but offers thought-provoking articles for docs and consumers, too, looking at health issues on everyone's minds
Dr. Wes - drop-dead right on! Intelligent and gutsy stuff. Everyone deserves a doctor like him.
Retired Doc - [http://mdredux.blogspot.com/] - with the wisdom and experience to offer profound insights
Best Health Policy/Ethics Blog:
Healthcare Renewal -- Science and integrity in medicine are its middle names, a must-read
Junkfood Science - makes us take a critical look, sometimes painful, at misguided health policies driven by bad science
Scientific Misconduct - for the best dirt from someone who knows and isn't afraid to talk
Best Clinical Science Blog:
Junkfood Science - no other blog critically examines the studies and bad science in healthcare better than this; not afraid to question what we've come to believe

Hello,
I'd like to nominate the Blog NY Emergency Medicine www.nyemergencymedicine.blogspot.com for the following categories:
1. Best new medical webblog
2. Best clinical sciences webblog
Going strong since January 2007, NY Emergency Medicine presents weekly contests of fascinating pathologies seen in the Emergency Department. This allows the average blogger, a privileged view into the house of medicine. In addition to the small prize money that is awarded to the weekly winner, the VizD section is actually educational. Moreover, NY Emergency Medicine integrates medical humanities posts that are quite insightful and truly a pleasure to read.
I look forward every week to reading this sites postings.
Thank you,
Jason Ryz

I would like to nominate TheBlogThatAteManhattan.blogspot.com for best health policies/ethics. Her relentless pursuit of keeping ahead of the ethics curve is truly insightful. The fact that she highlighted the ethical dilemma with Merck's involvement in funding the effort to have GARDASIL as a mandatory treatment in certains states was published well before the scandel hit. She is driven by her ethics and it shows. Good for her! That, and she is a hoot and a half! Best blog out there bar none.

I nominate www.bioethicsinternational for the best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog. They work to ensure quality healthcare through ethics education, training and advisory programs in hospitals, with medical association, universities etc- educating the current and future clinicians and scientists. good medical care depends on ethical doctors and nurses and I applaud BEI's recognitition of this nuance and work to materialize ethics is medicine.

I am pleased to be able to nominate Dr. Jolie Bookspan for:
Best Medical Weblog AND Best Clinical Sciences Weblog
www.healthline.com/blogs/exercise_fitness/
My personal story is one of many that demonstates how Dr. Bookspan can get you moving again - the right way and without pain. Whether you've got disc problems or issues with your knees, Dr. Bookspan is immediately positive about the prospects for healing to start right away. Her confidence comes from a true understanding of the source of the problem and the easiest possible way to address it. Within minutes of reading her articles, I started feeling like I finally understood the causes of the problem and what do do (and not do) to fix it and keep it that way. If more medical problems were approached this way, we would have far fewer "chronic conditions". Too often, we accept broad classifications and are ready to put ourselves in those categories. "I've got a bad back", "I've never had good posture", "My mother had bad knees - so do I". Dr. Bookspan teaches you how to recognize the causes of these problems and encourages you to observe other peoples' bad habits. This is a powerful tool through which you can see you "old self" and how a lack of awareness can lead to these seemingly chronic conditions. I feel compelled to offer this nomination because people in the medical field who approach problems by addressing the root causes deserve to be recognized.

I nominate The Blog That Ate Manhattan in the category of Best Health Policy/Ethics Blog by "TBTAM" -- In a brilliantly written blog, which draws the reader in with down-to-earth humor, Dr. TBTAM is enlightening on the subject of "Big Pharma" and provides medical folk and lay people alike with medical topics and questions that profoundly affect our lives. The "voice" of Dr. TBTAM is that of the doctor we all wish we had, someone we know would listen to us, hear us, offer kindly advice and a kick in the pants if needed. Dr. TBTAM should publish her blog in book form -- it's that good.

I nominate http://runningahospital.blogspot.com/, the blog of Paul Levy, CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. It's unique -- the first hospital CEO blog; plenty of controversial material; a lot of information about the medical field and its major challenges; ground-breaking work on safety and accountability.
I think it belongs under both Best Medical Blog and Best Health Policies/Ethics. It's received a lot of international attention.

My nomination for Best Medical Weblog has to be .
As someone who has nothing to do with the world of medicine (except as a patient) reading his blog for the last year or more has really opened my eyes to how the UK ambulance service works. If only everyone could read this then maybe they'd actually realise what the NHS is up against. Informative and well written, definately a winner as far as I'm concerned.

I would de-list junkfood science. It is an ideological crank-blog dedicated to attacking the link between obesity and disease by misrepresenting science. It is also allied to Steven Milloy's Junkscience, another anti-science blog that is supposedly scientific.

I want to second the nomination of Junk Food Science (http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/) in the following categories:
Best Medical Blog--no doctor "gets it" as well as Sandy Szwarc on issues around food, weight, dieting, and "obesity"
Best Clinical Science Blog--Sandy keeps up with clinical research better than anyone and always gives us the data, not spin, with regard to what the actual research shows
Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog--JFS, more than any other blog, exposes the political and financial interests behind such so-called "public health" campaigns as the "war on obesity", which in actual fact are damaging to public health in the extreme.

I am nominating Bioethics International, www.bioethicsinternationl.org, for the Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog. With the increased evolution of science and technology it is easy to only pay attention to new medical triumphs while losing focus on the methods used to achieve them. Bioethics International serves a critical role in the medical community, and society as a whole, in ensuring that the methods used in scientific advancement are just as ethical as the results.

Bioethics International's regular blog postings are a truly invaluable source of information, allowing readers to follow current bioethics news stories and the impact that medical technologies and advances have on patient care, as well as being a reference tool for readily identifying studies, lectures, conferences, panel discussions and round tables in the field. A Chronic Dose

You can tell from Laurie's blog that she is a writer as well as a patient. Her writing at times focuses on her own experiences (she and her family members have a few chronic illnesses) but more often than that her writing is a beautiful medium to express what is going in healthcare and how all people can relate better to their bodies, physicians, treatments, limitations, potentials, and families, etc. It is such an interesting read that you often forget you're reading about illness.

I miss a category in this competition, viz., medical history, medical science studies, medical museum and exhibition stuff, public understanding of medicine etc. There aren't that many blogs in this category yet, but Biomedicine on Display is a good candidate for a winner.
The "Biomedicine on Display"-blog is edited by a group of historians and ethnologists at Medical Museum, the earlier medical-history museum at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. They post almost everyday, and they cover a wide array of topics in a quite sophisticated way, e.g., how to collect medical gadgets for their museum, how to display invisible medical objects, and lots of reflections about biocitizenship, the role of medical research in knowledge society and stuff like that which no other medical blog really covers.

Amy Tenderich's Diabetes Mine continues to be a vital resource for anyone who is affected by diabetes. Regularly updated with content, Diabetes Mine is the hub and destination for diabetes news and discussions over controversial matters; all while remaining a down-to-earth blog about daily living with diabetes.
I believe that the online diabetes community would agree with me that Diabetes Mine should rightfully be nominated for the Best Medical Weblog and Best Patient's Blog categories.

At their best blogs written by "patients" can give an insight into the human impact of living with a disease. Kerri Morrone's blog, www.Sixuntilme.com, provides an amazing window into the life of a successful professional who's life is not defined but diabetes, but partially explained by it. She shares details from her life that are harrowing (trips to the emergency room) and joyous (announcing her engagement) and how diabetes fits in. As a person trying to learn about diabetes I found her blog to be an invaluable resource that provided insights not found in tables of statistics or "offical" sources of information. Given the enormity of the diabetes epidemic and the importance of information about living with it I would highly recommend www.sixuntilme.com for the "Best Medical Weblog" and "Best Patient's Blog" categories.

There are some really terrific nominations for Best Patient's Blog but I have to submit ChronicBabe.com. For my money it has to be Tom Reynold's blog at http://randomreality.blogware.com/ for Best Medical Weblog. It's insightful and often moving.

I disagree with your decision to reject Junkfoodscience, and also the rhetoric used. The fact is, Junkfoodscience regards the moral panic concerning obesity with a jaundiced eye. Skepticism is a basic ingredient in good science and Junkfoodscience is an excellent blog that routinely exposes flawed studies. Just because you might disagree doesn't mean it is "beyond recourse." And it is appalling that people are being allowed to call it "an ideological crank-blog" and to allege that it "misrepesents science."
Please retain it in your list of nominees.

It has helped me so much explaining to friends and family why I am so tired. Plus the support I get there is fantastic.
Special thanks to Christine and her 'Spoon Theory'.

I would love to nominate htt://www. butyoudontlooksick.com
I think it is the most wonderful community where people of all walks of life and from all over can come to feel at home. As someone who suffers from chronic illness/autoimmune disorder, I find it comforting to go there and just feel accepted by those who are understanding. The "Spoon Theory" by Christine the Spoon Lady is fabulous and the whole website is full of wonderful tips and treasures.

I'd like to to nominate Chronic Babe as best patient weblog. I have spent years feeling alone as a young chick (35 now - that's still young, right?!) with chronic illnesses. The Fibromyalgia Association was helpful and some clinics here were ok, but they were full of people much older than I. Although I can learn much from people of any life stage, it was so refreshing to encounter a community of like-minded chicks. We're sick, but we have hip lives (trying to anyway!) and we're doing the best we can.
I have recommended the site many times to my doctors - it's a great place to get info and a great place to let you know you are not alone.

I recommend Crazygirl.
www.crzegrl.net
She writes about the patients and their experiences, and she writes about what it means and feels like to be a health care provider.
And she kicks ass.

Nominate secretwave101 for best new medical weblog (http://secretwave101.wordpress.com). He's new to the scene but the writing is often lol funny but also insightful and informative. The blog is a good read for doctors, students and patients.
I like his idea to use blogging as a way to better connect with his patients.

This is the only medical blog I would read every day. I am a professional in the field, but not a physician. Dr. A is funny, relevant and knowledgeable. It's rare on a site moderated by a provider that I learn and laugh at the same time.

I don't read blogs. But, I read this one because my best friend insisted, and I am now a regular. I didn't know there was an award for the 'best medical blog'; this one should definitely be considered. If you haven't read it you're doing yourself a disservice.

There were several blogs I would like to have nominated but, being in the area of mental health, they don't truly fit into any of your categories. Last year, several bloggers, including me, requested the addition of mental health categories (practitioner and patient blogs) and it was disappointing to see mental health had again been overlooked. I hope you reconsider this for next year.
Best wishes,
HP

HealthPsych:
Mental health blogs could safely have been nominated in clinical or other categories. We don't go by specific body systems, or by professions. Psychiatry or psychology are clinical specialties, just like cardiology or urology.
