Medgadget's Sci-Fi Writing Contest: Return of the Prose

Welcome to the second annual Medgadget's Sci-Fi Writing Contest! Those of you old enough to remember our last year's competition, will recall the excitement, the competitive gallantry, and the results: an amazing set of stories that looked at the past and saw the future of medicine. We saw the world free of chronic diseases, and we witnessed medicine being practiced on planets many light-years away. Let us see the future of medicine again!

Just like last year, here are the rules:

  • Your essay has to be 250-2500 words. Text. English language. No mp3's with you reading your story and cool sound effects in the background, (at least, not this time). And no videos, flash, or jpg's either.

  • Top entries will be printed here and thus, must be safe for work. That's not to say we don't love artsy violence and gratuitous love scenes, however. Just keep the language and meaning clean.

  • Judges will be blinded. Blinded by your dazzling prose, yes, but also to your identity. We are assembling an all-star judging panel, so you can be assured your work will be reviewed by accomplished writers, physicians, and fans of Battlestar Galactica. To help us with grading your papers, Ves Dimov from Clinical Cases and Images, Enoch Choi from Doctor Geek, M.D., Allen from GruntDoc, Dave from Respectful Insolence, John Crippen aka NHS Blog Doctor, Amy Tenderich from Diabetes Mine, Steven Palter from docinthemachine, and Sydney from Medpundit will be judges.

  • Submissions from anonymous bloggers and writers are acceptable, but we'll need an address or PO Box to send your prize! Your prize being, of course, the one and only Apple iPhone, provided with generous courtesy by the new and spiffy ScrubsGallery.com, a place to shop for all your hospital fashion needs.


  • Entries are due three weeks from now, October 9th. Winners will be announced, and reprinted here on Medgadget, a week later. Send in your submissions to: sci...@medgadget.com.

    If I submit a story do I lose the rights to my intellectual property should I decide to revise and/or publish the story elsewhere?

    Medgadget does not assume any rights to the story except to publish it on these pages. The author retains all publishing rights otherwise and can do what he/she wishes with it.
