I have trialed the entire GE laptop new series. The ob gyn one primarily used is the voluson series and the top of the line voluson i. the vivid is tha same form factor and basis with some diofferent electronics. It makes sense to go this way. My full size D ultrasound is primarily a big CRT with a huge platorm containing a windows 2000 box to run the thing. No reason all the computer can't be replaced with a laptop as ge did. I compared the full size and laptop side by side on the same patients and the results wer nearly idntical. Only problem is dropping an $80,000 laptop sucks big time!

Vivid "e" is a great portable, but Vivid "i"is simply the best portable on the market. Image quality, speed and tech content make it almost scary, considering the size. It's sort of a "Vivid 7 in a pocket". Great product!

Yes yes-- the vivid i is the one I tried head to head with thte huge voluson 730 and image quality on 2d 3d and 4d was comparable. State of the art is now in a laptop form factor. Fragility and durability is a huge concern however.

I too have recently viewed what is available on the market in regard to portable/lab top systems. It is impressive how these small units measure up to the big systems. If you have sticker shock about the price, look at the MyLab 30cv from Biosound Esaote. Recently I had both the vivid i and mylab in the office and the Biosound unit is equally as good as the ge, but 1/2 the price and faster at saving the data to cd. Very impressive little machine.
