Medgadget's Sci-Fi Writing Contest

While we're blogging about all these great medical advances, we're getting kind of anxious for the future to just show up, already. We can't quite imagine what that future will be like... but maybe you can! Or, at the very least, you can tell an entertaining tale involving medicine, from the perspective of a few years from now... or decades, or centuries. Or, write about healthcare in a world just slightly different from today's.

You can write about a medgadget, an ethical dilemma, a dangerous new experiment, or some overbearing pharmaceutical firm or government institution. Or anything else you can conceive of that's medically sci-fi. We're just laying down a few ground rules:

  • It's gotta be 250-2500 words. Text. English language. No mp3's with you reading your story and cool sound effects in the background, (at least, not this time). And no videos, flash, or jpg's either.
  • Top entries will be printed here and thus, must be safe for work. That's not to say we don't love violence and gratuitous love scenes, however. Just keep the language and meaning clean.
  • Judges will be blinded. Blinded by your dazzling prose, yes, but also to your identity. We are assembling an all-star judging panel, so you can be assured your work will be reviewed by accomplished writers, physicians, and fans of Battlestar Galactica. To help us with grading your papers, Enoch from Tech Medicine, GruntDoc, and Josh from KidneyNotes will be judges.
  • Submissions from anonymous bloggers and writers are acceptable, but we'll need an address or PO Box to send your prize! Your prize being, of course, the slick, hi-tech ds32a Digital Electronic Stethoscope, from the generous folks at Thinklabs Medical. You'll lean in to listen to a patient's heart ... and hear... the future!

    It could be yours!

  • Entries are due by December 1st. Winners will be announced, and reprinted here on Medgadget, a short time later. Send in your submissions to: scifi@medgadget.com.

That's it! Get your thinking caps on and start typing! Feel free to browse our archives ... for inspiration.
