The 2005 Medical Weblog Awards
, Net News

Welcome to the second annual Medical Weblog Awards! These awards are designed to honor the very best in the medical blogosphere, as decided by you--the readers of these fine medical blogs.
It's been another year filled with explosive growth, stirring debate, and excellent writing -- in a number of fields. Our categories reflect this diversity. The categories for this year's awards will be:
-- Best Medical Weblog
-- Best New Medical Weblog (established in 2005)
-- Best Literary Medical Weblog
-- Best Clinical Sciences Weblog
-- Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog
-- Best Medical Technologies/Informatics Weblog
Nominations are now accepted in the comment section of this post. Nominate your favorite medical weblog, even if it's your own. A blog can participate in more than one category.
The following timeline will be observed:
-- Nominations will be accepted until Friday, December 30, 2005.
-- Polls will be open from Tuesday, January 3, 2006 and will close at midnight on Sunday, January 15, 2005 (PST).
-- Awards will be announced on Wednesday, January 25, 2006.
In addition to a full year of bragging rights, this year's winners will be awarded with the amazing book by Alexander Tsiaras and Barry Werthof The Architecture and Design of Man and Woman : The Marvel of the Human Body, Revealed. Offers are accepted from individuals and companies to provide additional gifts for the winners (please write to medgadget-at-medgadget-dot-com).
Medgadget.com, as well as the individual blogs of our editors, are not eligible to participate in the awards.
Voting for the awards will be open to all, but you will only be able to vote once (we control the polling software, specifically installed for the awards. No hacking or cookie manipulation will be tolerated -- only one vote for each category from a particular IP address.) All final decisions will be made by our editors.
Good luck to all!
UPDATE (December 30, 2005): The 2005 Medical Weblog Awards Nominees
UPDATE (January 17, 2006): 2005 Medical Weblog Awards: Meet the Winners!
Actually, with all respect to the rest of the piece, doesn't their article state this?

I don't know if this is possible, but I really would like to see a category for best medical student blog. I don't think it's quite fair to compare the writings of an established physician (or even one in a residency program where one deals with patients and the healthcare system all day long as a job) with a student who is barely coming into one's own, discovering so many different things for the first time. I think if there can be granularity separating "Medical," "Literary Medical," and "Health Science," surely "Medical Student" deserves a place IMHO.
Apologies if this was not the best place to make this comment, but I didn't know where else to do so.
Cheers to all! :) --e

On behalf of the entire American Council on Science and Health (ACSH), I'd like to nominate our public health blog--www.HealthFactsAndFears.com--geared towards helping people in separating science fact from science fiction. In a time of much fear, confusion, and faltering trust when it comes to medical/pharmaceutical issues, our postings attempt to elucidate the truth about what's harmful and what is not, what research has been done, and what hasn't, which organizations/outlets are sources of sound-scientific information, and which are not. We also serve as media watchdogs, commenting and correcting erroneous health science in news rerports. As far as our own validity as a sound scientific non-profit, our staff, writers, and advisors include over 350 renouned scientists, MDs, and public health experts who review and fact-check our work. We have to get the truth out about science and health. Help us to do so!

Could there be a category for best patient medical blog? There are many great blogs that would fit into this category, but I would nominate "Cancer News Watch" - http://www.cancer-news-watch.com
Although my blog is okay, I think it will be better next year after I go through the surgery that I created the blog to document.

In the Best Health Policies/Ethics Weblog category:
-- The editor's blog of the American Journal of Bioethics
-- The Women's Bioethics project
-- Karama Neal's So What Can I Do (the only health issues website that can put me in a GOOD mood)
Now if I could nominate my own category, it would be 'Health policy/ethics website not obsessively focused on the United States and other developed nations'. Then I wound nominate my own blog, the Global Bioethics Blog. But I don't see this category taking off.

Kevin MD is good for general stuff, and another one that I don't think I have seen anyone else nominate here for the Policies/Ethics category, which I would like to nominate, is the Lucidicus Project (Lucidicus.org). Clean, great content (more than just ad hoc, quick thoughts, which adds to its uniqueness), and no ads. For anyone interested in what medicine would be like under a free market, I highly recommend that.
