Lip Piercing Can Lead to Receding Gums

The International Association for Dental Research conveys the latest warning (.pdf):

Numerous case reports and a few clinical studies have examined the association between tongue piercing and receding gums, and oral piercing, typically involving the tongue and/or the lip, has been associated with periodontal complications. However, there are no such studies on lip piercing.

A research group from the Ohio State University in Columbus recruited, from the community, 29 young adults with lip piercing (mean age, 21 years, 8 months; 15 females) and 29 without (mean age, 22 years, 3 months; 15 females) and examined them for gingival recession on the buccal aspect of the mandibular central incisors.

There were no demographic (age, gender distribution) differences between the two groups of subjects. Receding gums were were significantly greater among subjects with lip piercing (41.4%) than among controls (6.9%). The average recession depth was more than double in subjects with piercing compared with controls. Length of time of wear was the only significantly associated demographic variable.

These results indicate that lip piercing is strongly associated with increased prevalence and severity of receding gums, and increased time of wear is associated with increased prevalence of recession.

Things also don't look good for tongue barbells...

you people are idiots. Serena as well. "like oh ma god, i have one for like, a month, and because i don't have it your are wrong" shut up chick!! studies are made to find common issues in a set not the special exceptions. for the iddiots who made the conclusion to just say that the piercing is causing the problem is retarded. u they should do a study on stupid people doing studies! so what is it, the stainless steel? the gums being afraid of the metal? if these are theproblems then state it. really, you overlook the most obvious common tie in your study----the people. change your dogma and you might get a better conclusion. is it the type of person on average that gets piercings that lives a lifestyle that would more likely have dental issues or is it the metal?
duh

I would like to know where people get off!! I have had a vail bed for ten years for my very disabled son, it is a bed not a babysitter, my son has never been trapped by the bed, I feel like it is the safest bed out there, I had to fight to get the bed 10 years ago, I spoke with the FDA while fighting to get the bed, and it was safer than the hospital beds that they wanted me to get for my son, the FDA faxed me safety standards for the vail bed and safety hazards for the regular hospital bed. I just don't get people today, the bed didn't kill anyone, the fact that the child was put in the bed and unattended killed the child. I am sorry for the loss of the children but facts are facts, if you put a dog in a cage on a chain unattended and don't pay attention the dog, the dog see's something it wants outside the cage, the dog will hang itself to get to whatever it was that it wanted so, is that the fault of the cage, and chain? no it is because the dog was unattended, saw something it wanted, not unlike a child. I'd be willing to bet that the children were mobile, got stuck in the bed while retrieving something, the child got stuck, children with disabilities, don't fear to much, I'm guessing that the child fell to sleep while stuck, and that is how the child died, I hate that I feel this way, but my child has been in his bed over ten years now, and I love the fact that he is safe in it. I hate the fact that I can't get hold of vail products, to get anything for his bed.
